Middle Centre

In 2019, Curators Sibongile Msimango and Sam Goldblatt, together with photographer Kgomotso Neto, came together to explore the concept of public exhibitions within central Johannesburg, and how people would engage with them. The first point of departure was to look at the taxi rank as a central site, or middle centre, to showcase artworks that speak directly to the audience viewing them. Middle Centre brought Bree Taxi Rank to UNDERLINE Show, where Kgomotso Neto won a prize sponsored by Devil's Peak. Later that year, Middle Centre exhibited works at Bree Taxi Rank. The works were taken down shortly afterwards.
For LATITUDES Online, Middle Centre shares snippets of life under lockdown through Neto's lens, where he captures contrasts between the eerily empty city streets and intimate scenes of his own family life.
