She works with photographs that once belonged to other people and families, bringing them into her own collages of interiors, gardens, possessions and landscapes. These photographs initially feel intimate and recognisable. We understand what a family photograph is supposed to do; we understand the idea of home. But there is something uncanny about looking at someone else’s memories and using them to construct your own. This is where the foreign and familiar begin to overlap. Stodel takes images that are completely foreign to her personal history and uses them to create something emotionally familiar: a home, a childhood, a sense of belonging. The collage creates a strange slippage between my memory and someone else’s memory. Can a memory belong to us if we never experienced it?\r\nThis is also where Stodel enters into other-worlding. She isn't simply documenting the homes she has lived in. She is constructing an alternative home from fragments that already exist. She cuts, tears and rearranges these images, creating a parallel domestic world where different houses, families, objects and landscapes can coexist. And this brings us to speculative knowledge. Stodel reminds us that knowledge doesn't only come from factual records or experiences we personally remember. Sometimes we construct knowledge through fragments, imagination and emotional association.\r\nThese found photographs become evidence for a history that isn't entirely hers, while the act of rearranging them allows her to speculate about what home could be. Within Kindred, Stodel therefore offers a particularly intimate form of other-worlding: she takes fragments of other people's realities and uses them to imagine a place of her own.
