LANDSCAPES OF HUMANITY: Exploring Identity and Community

Gallery 2, in collaboration with Sylt Foundation, presents “Landscapes of Humanity”, a captivating exhibition featuring the works of three distinct artists:

Jaco van Schalkwyk delves into the intimate lives of his subjects, capturing not just their faces but also the personal narratives that bind them to him. Through portraits, installations, and still lifes, he explores the complexities of identity and the multifaceted nature of relationships.

Nhlanhla Nhlapo draws inspiration from personal history, family photos, and his South African hometown to create works imbued with nostalgia, community, and introspection. His paintings and drawing juxtapose portraiture, interiors, and landscapes, reflecting on the passage of time, land ownership, and the ongoing transformation of post-apartheid South Africa.

Tuomo Manninen creates meticulously composed group portraits that blur the line between documentary and staged photography. His subjects, aware of the camera's gaze, actively participate in constructing the image. Manninen explores the tension between individual identity and collective belonging, highlighting how both shape and erase individual characteristics.

This exhibition invites viewers on a journey through diverse landscapes of human experience, prompting reflection on personal narratives, shared histories, and ever-evolving tapestry of identity.
