Lindo Zwane | Ubumnyame

Lindo Zwane | Ubumnyame

The brighter the light, the deeper the shadow.

- Jay Kristoff, Nevernight

Lindo Zwane presents mystery, intensity and pure intentions with his latest solo exhibition, ubumnyama. The title of this exhibition refers to a play on darkness, like the color black or a shadow. This body of work extends a generous invitation to interrogate the deepest corners of our own being.

The artist plays with the elements of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and forms on his canvas, creating a visual balance between simplicity and complexity. This juxtaposition allows a continuous rethinking and comparison of opposing thoughts that follow in its wake. The artist uses high contrast in his work, reminding us of the never-ending duplicity of human nature – one that is both good and evil.

The artist invites us on a journey of introspection as he leads us through the darkness or ubumnyama, using his own portraits as reference material for a symbol of hope and light.

Lindokuhle Zwane was born in 1992 in Newcastle, South Africa. He works predominantly in paintings and charcoal drawings as well as printmaking mediums. He studied printmaking at Artist Proof Studio where he worked as a drawing facilitator for 3 years. In 2017 Zwane won the Ekurhuleni prize in one of the country’s most prestigious art competitions, the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards - winning the painting merit award at Thami Mnyele Arts Awards in 2019 again.
