M I L K Collective: Exploring Identity Through Art

Founded in February 2022, M I L K is an art collective where four artists – Gillian Rosselli, Martina Gruber, Tosca Marthinus, and Neena Borrill – use their bodies to express individual messages about gender identity and sexuality.

Their art aims to raise awareness of the experiences of queer individuals and couples in conservative environments, exploring how they navigate societal norms while preserving safe spaces.

This exploration began during a week-long residency in a shared Cape Town studio. During that time, they embarked on a series of performances, photo shoots, and discussions under the umbrella of ‘Current Affairs 2022 – Conversations about the Body’, culminating in a showcase at The Cape Town Art Fair.

“The works we create and perform together,” they say, “are personal reactions to what we witness, past and present. We use our bodies as a language when words fall short.”

While primarily focusing on photography, M I L K embraces diverse mediums like mixed media, video, and sound installations. Their work features minimal black and white compositions of objects or people, often manipulated or distorted using manual techniques during the shoot, without post-production editing. This approach challenges commercial photography norms and visual conventions, allowing them to delve into themes of psychology and social conditioning.

As artists with diverse backgrounds and individual practices, they actively seek opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration. They question boundaries between different individual expression and collective identity, exploring where their voices merge and diverge, where collaboration enriches their art, and where individual boundaries remain crucial. They aim to understand how their individual and collective use of their bodies resonates with contemporary collective artistic practices.
