Andrew Mogridge is a full-time South African fine artist specializing in ceramics and painting, whose work is characterized by an intuitive process and a dose of acerbic humour. Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, Mogridge's artistic journey began with a diploma in Graphic Design from the Port Elizabeth Technikon, followed by an honours degree in painting from Walter Sisulu University, where he earned a distinction.
His early career saw him transition from academia, accepting a lecturing position at the university, to the world of advertising, where he became a Creative Director before opening his own design studio. This diverse professional background informs his current practice, which eschews strict planning in favour of imagination and the unexpected. Today, his work is exhibited in some of the most respected art galleries in the country.
Mogridge’s art explores themes of power dynamics and what he terms "the farce of authority." He embraces the absurd, inviting chance and "unhappy accidents" into his creative process. Working with figurative and literal archetypes on highly activated surfaces, he adds further layers of risk and uncertainty to his work. Ultimately, Mogridge invites viewers to relax and engage with his pieces on an immediate level, enjoying their wit and humour without the pressure of searching for a deeper, prescribed meaning.
