Mashir Kresenshun

Mashir Kresenshun (b. 1999, South Africa) is a dynamic and evolving artist based in Johannesburg. From a young age, he developed a deep connection with creativity, and upon graduating high school, he made a conscious decision to pursue a career that combined both passion and purpose. His artistic journey led him to explore various mediums, ultimately finding a distinctive voice in the world of visual arts.

Kresenshun works across multiple discipline, with a particular focus on drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Central to his practice is the use of cardboard, which he has chosen not only as a medium but also a metaphor. Through this, Kresenshun questions the essence of humanity, exploring ideas of fragility, impermanence, and identity. The cardboard itself—an often discarded material—becomes a powerful tool for reflection on the value and significance of life, challenging the traditional understanding of what makes us human.

His approach to printmaking on cardboard sets him apart. This innovative method allows him to create unique textures and surfaces, while his sculptural additions add a dimensional quality to the works, inviting viewers to engage with the art on multiple levels. The layered use of materials and techniques within his practice reflects his ongoing exploration of the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.

Kresenshun's formal education began at the University of Johannesburg, where he hone his skills and deepened his understanding of art theory and practice. He is currently studying at Artist Proof Studios, further refining his techniques. His artistic endeavors are centered at his studio in August House.

Kresenshun's work has earned him significant recognition. In 2019, he was selected as one of the Top 20 artists in Thami Mnyele and was also named among the Top 100 artists in Sasol New Signatures. Looking ahead, Kresenshun is preparing for a highly anticipated exhibition in London later this year.
