LegakwanaLeo Makgekgenene b. 1995 Gaborone, Botswana holds a BAFA (Hon.)(New Media) from the University of Cape Town. LegakwanaLeo’s work is a determined effort to bypass cultural censorship and to counteract the restrictions of toxic traditionalism, producing an elusive critique of state machinery and sociological constructions. Makgekgenene is currently studying towards their Master of Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art; tracking the evolutions of Botswana’s women’s movements while exploring specifically for black women-alternative points of access to critical and radical pedagogies. Makgekgenene is a co-founder of The Botswana Pavilion and was selected for the Thapong Arts Centre and British Council’s collaborative initiative Echoes of (Un)silenced Voices (2019).
