Nano Le Face
Ntwanano Shilubana (b. 1999), better known as Nano Le Face or simply Nano, is a self-taught visual artist based in Pretoria, South Africa. Nano studied Film Arts at the Open Window Institute in Pretoria and at AFDA in Johannesburg before committing entirely to fine art. Through a suite of Post-Pop drawings, Nano Le Face employs humour and satire to mock and critique our obsession with consumerism, fame, and self-image.
Nano work is distinguished by sharp-witted prose and acerbic characterization offering a biting critique of contemporary culture. Nano began his artistic practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that prompted individuals to observe one another through screens, turning their attention inward. Initially gaining traction on Instagram, Nano developed a dedicated base of collectors. His works quickly attracted attention from prominent figures in the art world, leading to numerous exhibitions and fairs, including the Turbine Art Fair and RMB Latitudes Art Fair.
Working primarily in mixed media on paper, Nano's creations borrow freely from popular culture, editorial photography, and luxury brand advertisements. His imagery is flattened into vivid lines and striking colours palettes, presenting scenes that seem like bite-sized snippets from a satirical cartoon. Through a combination of coloured pencils and wax crayons, Nano crafts playful yet deeply critical works that draw viewers into a world of glamour and melodrama.
Nano’s art often features enigmatic characters and scenes, allowing viewers to interpret and imagine their own narratives. His characters, such as the recurring "Bettys and Veronicas," embody a mixture of distant glamour and relatable human traits, reinforcing the satirical nature of his work.
Nano’s recent works continue to delve into themes of pop culture, hyper-consumerism, and social media vanity. He remains fascinated by the glamorized yet surreal nature of celebrity culture, capturing its essence in his satirical and often provocative drawings. Through his evolving artistic practice, Nano Le Face offers a mirror to society’s obsessions and invites viewers to engage with his biting critiques.
Nano’s distinctive voice and artistic style ensure that his works are not only visually captivating but also intellectually stimulating, providing a fresh perspective on the complexities of modern life.
