Sophia van Wyk is a South African artist who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch and graduated cum laude with a Master of Fine Art from the University of Johannesburg in 2015. Along with her fine art education, van Wyk holds qualifications in furniture making, with a specialization in wood machining and cabinet making. This technical skill in craftsmanship plays a significant role in her artistic practice, blending both conceptual and material elemens in her works.
Between 2007 and 2013, van Wyk was actively involved in community engagement workshops and artist talks, which shaped her approach to art-making and deepened her connection to both local and global art communities. Her most recent solo exhibition, Future Mythology, was held at Everard Read Cape Town in May 2022. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across South Africa, including at the renowned NIROX Sculpture Park, and has been awarded several prestigious residencies both locally and internationally, further enhancing her exploration of contemporary art.
