Tamara Osso (b. 1983) is an artist and educator whose practice explores the relationship between the immediacy of performance and the physicality of painting. Her artistic approach is deeply informed by her background in dance, having trained and worked extensively as a ballet and contemporary dancer. During her career as a performer, Osso collaborated with and performed for numerous local and international theatre companies, experiences that continue to influence her understanding of movement, gesture, space and the body.
Following her career in dance, Osso transitioned into the visual arts, pursuing her interest in translating the energy and immediacy of performance into a material and visual language. In 2014, she completed her Master of Arts in Fine Art (MAFA) degree with distinction at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg. She later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), also with distinction, further developing her commitment to education.
Osso currently works as both an educator and practising artist, continuing to develop a body of work that brings together her experiences in dance, painting and teaching. Her multidisciplinary background informs an ongoing investigation into the ways movement and physical experience can be captured, transformed and expressed through painting.
