ToscaNeena is a Cape Town-based photography couple, a collaborative entity formed by artists Tosca Marthinus and Neena Borrill in 2019. (They/them). Working in unison, they develop and execute singular creative concepts that challenge the boundaries of their medium.
Their practice is defined by a rigorous and purist approach to photography. Working exclusively in black and white, they create simplified compositions of objects or people which are then manipulated or distorted using manual, in-camera techniques. Crucially, their final images are achieved without any digital post-production, a commitment that underscores the integrity of their process.
This distinct visual language serves their exploration of psychology and social conditioning. By bending the rules of commercial photography and aesthetic conventions, ToscaNeena creates images that mirror human emotions and complex states of the psyche, often using blur and other distortions to evoke a feeling rather than document a reality. While photography is their primary focus, they also extend their conceptual inquiries into other mediums, including mixed media, video, and sound installation.
