Tzung Hui Lauren Lee (b. 1998) is a multimedia South African Chinese artist based in Johannesburg. A recent graduate of the Wits School of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand with a BA in Fine Arts, Lee has quickly established a unique and compelling artistic voice. Her practice is primarily installation-based, emerging from a multi-layered process that incorporates digital spaces, hand-made paper, sculpture, and calligraphy.
A core element of Lee's work is the translation of two-dimensional markings, such as her personal writings and calligraphic forms, into three-dimensional, immersive environments. She draws profound inspiration from Chinese philosophy and culture, particularly customary folk art, using it as a lens to investigate complex themes of personal diaspora, the decolonization of the self, identity, and the intricate relationships that span past and present.
In a significant recognition of her early career, Lee's work was acquired for the BMW Group's Private Art Collection in 2021, and is situated at the BMW Midrand Campus in Johannesburg.
