Wezile Harmans

Wezile Mgibe is an acclaimed South African art practitioner whose interdisciplinary work encompasses performance, film, and installation to drive social change. His practice is centered on confronting societal prejudices and advocating against inequality, creating platforms for critical self-reflection in often unwelcoming spaces. In recognition of his impactful work, Mgibe is a recipient of the prestigious 2019 David Koloane Award and a 2020 Arts & Culture Trust Award.

A core element of Mgibe's practice involves developing continuous, site-specific series that interrogate the dynamics of place and culture. He powerfully uses his own body as a primary tool to reveal forgotten ways of existence and to facilitate a process of internal healing. A recurring visual motif is his body covered in bandages, a striking image that evokes the dual sensation of remembering home while simultaneously carrying a profound sense of exile.

Mgibe's work has been exhibited at prominent institutions both locally and internationally, including the Iziko South African National Gallery, Norval Foundation, FNB Art Joburg, the Centre for Applied Human Rights (UK), and Hangar Online (Portugal). He has an extensive history of residencies and workshops, and is currently a permanent artist at the Bag Factory studios in Johannesburg.
