In The Between: State of Becoming

presented by Eyimofe Ideh

______

What happens in the space between certainty and the unknown?

Between who we were and who we are becoming?

In the Between: States of Becoming is a contemporary art exhibition exploring the psychological and emotional terrain of transition moments suspended between stability and chaos, clarity and confusion. The exhibition presents a raw and resonant look at the human condition through the lens of mental health, focusing on the invisible yet transformative process of change.

Rooted in personal experiences, In the Between reflects both an inward journey and a shared human truth. It speaks to the fragile, often disorienting space we all encounter when the familiar begins to fall away and something undefined takes its place. These works do not merely depict mental health; they give form to the rawness of transition, the ambiguity of becoming, and the emotional weight of navigating the unknown.

Roanna Tella’s meditations on joy and foreboding hold the fragile duality of becoming, where beauty and distress coexist in a single breath. Lawrence Meju’s vibrant collages transform fragments of urban rhythm into narratives of flux, mirroring the unpredictability of change. Stella Ekpe Samuel’s textured surfaces embody memory and womanhood as shifting thresholds, capturing the weight of identity in transition. Adeleke Femi’s expressionist figures reveal vulnerability and strength intertwined, charting the emotional terrain of memory and aspiration. Ololade Lawal’s abstractions of root and form trace the delicate balance between detachment and belonging. Together, these practices extend the exhibition’s meditation on liminality, offering resonant forms for the unseen shifts that define our becoming.

Mental health is often treated as a destination a diagnosis, a state of wellness, a recovery. But In the Between posits mental health as a spectrum of becoming: a nonlinear and deeply human process. In a world increasingly shaped by unpredictability; politically, environmentally, and personally this exhibition offers space to grieve, to reflect, and to imagine who we are when everything we’ve known slips away.

Ultimately, In the Between isn’t about resolution.

It is about the courage to remain in flux.
