A woman’s world is filled with little fires everywhere. Everyday, there’s news of unjust treatments and unfair rules that exist simply because we’re women. This piece was inspired by the femicides in Nigeria, Giselle Pelicot’s case and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s situation amongst others which were some cases that hit me the hardest at that point. It’s overwhelming and shocking, yet with each new story, I feel less surprised but more angry and frustrated. As my friend put it, I feel “calmly exasperated” which sadly is the reality of being a woman.
But even when I feel exhausted, I also feel proud. Seeing women everywhere speak up, fight against injustice and create change gives me hope. It reminds me that no matter how heavy the world feels, we keep pushing forward. It encourages me to do better for myself and for other women, to keep adding my voice to the fight.
Maybe the fires will never fully go out, but the effort to put them out matters. Every battle fought, every small victory, every moment of solidarity and even the losses makes a difference. We celebrate, we mourn, we rest but we keep pushing, that is something I’ll never forget.
