‘Colourism (Still Black)’ is an exploration of the cultural hypocrisy, secrecy and nuance of colourism as a dark skinned girl growing up in Nigeria. What do you do when you are taught to hate your skin by people who look like you? Colourism is an identity crisis that this collage piece investigates.
The collage is made out of magazine and newspaper ad clippings, advertisements that showcase the desirability of lighter skin complexions. This profound piece also utilises repetitive text, statements and questions, that drives home the cacophony of sneering voices dark skinned girls endure growing up, as well the internal voices of self loathing.
