Andile Bhala (b. Soweto, South Africa) is a Johannesburg-based documentary and
commercial photographer whose work is rooted in powerful, human-centered
storytelling. Informed by his upbringing in Soweto, Bhala brings an immersive
and deeply sensitive approach to documenting contemporary South African life
exploring themes of identity, memory, masculinity, spirituality, and everyday
resilience with striking honesty and nuance.
He has exhibited extensively across South Africa and internationally. Notable
presentations include Inkumbulo (Cape Town, Paris), with exhibitions at
Investec Cape Town, Kiff & Marais (Paris), FNB art fair and along the Sea Point
Promenade (Cape Town); Seriti at the Rise Africa Festival; and Balelihle at COOP
Gallery, Nashville. His work has also been shown at the Arles International
Festival (France), Jakarta, Vienna, and London, with upcoming exhibitions
scheduled for London (2026), Arles (2026), and Lagos (2025).
Earlier career highlights include uBUDODA at the Market Theatre Art Fair
(Johannesburg) and Addis Foto Fest (Ethiopia, 2018), God Moves at RMB Art
