Angèle Etoundi Essamba (b. 1962) is an acclaimed contemporary photographer born in Douala, Cameroon. Raised and educated in France, she later relocated to the Netherlands to study at the prestigious Nederlandse Fotovakschool (Dutch School for Professional Photography) in Amsterdam, where she remains based today. Moving fluidly between these diverse cultural geographies has deeply shaped her visual vocabulary, allowing her to challenge conventional, flattened depictions of African identity through a highly refined, humanist lens.
Her practice focuses extensively on the identity, beauty, and agency of Black women, intentionally dismantling colonial and patriarchal stereotypes to restore grandeur, strength, and pride to her subjects.
