Candice Myataza (b. 1997, Cape Town, South Africa) is a visual artist whose practice explores self-awareness, human connection, and God as pathways to meaning and liberation. She graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Film, Anthropology, and Sociology.
Beginning her artistic practice in 2019 during a period of profound introspection, Myataza’s early work emerged from her experience of growing up mixed-race in South Africa. As the only mixed-race child in predominantly Black schools, she grappled with questions of belonging and identity. While these personal experiences formed the foundation of her practice, her work has since evolved toward a broader inquiry into the shared experiences that connect humanity across social, cultural, and racial boundaries.
Working primarily with acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, Myataza creates characters often expressed in varying shades of brown as well as motifs that examine both the visible and invisible dimensions of existence.
Drawing from personal experience, everyday encounters, and spiritual contemplation, her paintings invite viewers into spaces of reflection, encouraging a deeper awareness of self, others, and the divine presence that underpins human life.
