Débora Sandjai
Luanda

Débora Sandjai (born in 1996, Luanda, Angola) is an angolan visual artist whose
practice spans painting, installation, and video. Her work explores the relationships between territory, memory, identity, the body, and geographical freedom, drawing on both personal narratives and Angola’s social and historical context.

After studying Architecture for three years at the Metropolitan Institute of Angola (IMETRO) and completing a Dressmaking and Tailoring course at MAPESS, she developed her artistic practice independently through research, studio experimentation, exhibitions, and collaborative projects. Sandjai is the co-founder of Ndako 2.2.4, an independent artist-run space in Luanda dedicated to artistic production, research, and cultural programming.

Her recent projects include Acentus, an installation exploring family memory and female inheritance; CRIVO Witch Hunt, an interdisciplinary
project examining historical and contemporary mechanisms of exclusion and social judgment; and Martires Is My Country, an ongoing artistic research project investigating territory, identity, and collective memory.

In 2023, she participated in the ResiliArt Artist Residency, which included international mobility to Paris and participation in Africa Week at UNESCO Headquarters. Through her multidisciplinary practice, Sandjai continues to investigate how geography, memory, and belonging shape individual and collective experiences.
