Fred Schimmel (1928–2009) was a Dutch-born South African artist celebrated for his abstract paintings and pioneering work in silkscreen printmaking. After emigrating to South Africa in 1948, he taught at the Polly Street Art Centre and collaborated with artists like Walter Battiss. In 1970, Schimmel founded the Graphic Club of South Africa to promote printmaking as a fine art. His works have been exhibited internationally and are part of esteemed collections, including the South African National Gallery and the Pretoria Art Museum.
