Grietjie Lee

South Africa

Grietjie Lee is a South African multidisciplinary artist whose practice examines the ecological tensions of the Anthropocene through a post-anthropocentric lens.
Working with images of birds, animals, sentient beings and the microscopic worlds of soil and fungi, Lee explores the entanglement of human and more-than-human life. Her practice engages with ecocriticism, multispecies thinking and relational ecology, questioning the anthropocentric assumption that the natural world exists primarily for human use.
Recurring tensions between reverence and destruction, care and possession, beauty and ecological loss position her work within a broader enquiry into non-human agency and our ethical relationship with other forms of life.
Rather than representing nature as something outside the human world, Lee's work considers humans as participants within complex, interdependent ecological systems.
