Jessica Bosworth Smith

South Africa

Jessica Bosworth Smith (b. 1991, Johannesburg) is an established contemporary South African visual artist, illustrator, and ceramicist based in Cape Town. Her deeply narrative studio practice functions as a dedicated portal for fantasy, play, and escapism. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2014, and subsequently completed an Honours specializing in Curatorship. Moving fluidly between detailed gouache paintings, ink drawings, and hand-built ceramic sculptures, Bosworth Smith creates whimsical, highly stylized worlds designed to invite viewers into a shared space of childlike wonder and introspection.

Bosworth Smith's intricate compositions purposefully blur the boundaries between the real and the imagined, drawing heavily from classic folk tales, ancient mythologies, medieval tapestries, and personal memories. Her signature style relies on a vibrant, carefully curated color palette, complex patterns, and flat perspective lines reminiscent of historical woodcuts. Rather than depicting grand public dramas, her work focuses on the intimate, domestic, and quiet moments within her imaginary realms, often inserting enigmatic human figures coexisting with animals or living architecture. Through these dreamlike vignettes, she investigates universal human emotions, processing contemporary anxiety and the search for security by creating protective, alternative mythologies.
