Juan Stockenstroom
Juan Stockenstroom (b. 1982, Cape Town) is an established contemporary South African visual painter, sculptor, and digital artist who lives and works in his native city. Emerging from the unique cultural and political tapestry of the Western Cape, Stockenstroom began his professional artistic journey working extensively in photography, film noir lighting, and post-production digital manipulation. However, after a number of years operating behind the lens, he found the structural boundaries of the digital canvas limiting and chose to completely abandon it. In 2018, he transitioned full-time into fine art painting, embracing the physical canvas as a far more expansive and expressive vehicle to interrogate personal identity, lost histories, and collective memory.
Stockenstroom’s heavily layered painterly practice addresses the profound socio-political themes surrounding his upbringing and lived experiences as a person of mixed race and heritage (historically and culturally termed “Coloured”) in both apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. His maximalist compositions reject negative space; he famously crams his canvases full of textures, figures, and historical motifs to create a visual wave that "talks you out of the room." His distinct visual language often pairs deep historical research with pop culture soundbites, blending ancient African empires, historical slavery, and systemic post-apartheid social issues like gangsterism and gender-based violence into singular, confrontational dialogues.
