Láura Viruly (b. 1997, Johannesburg) is a Cape Town-based sculptor working primarily in forged and formed aluminium, alongside installation. She completed her Master of Fine Art with distinction at the University of Cape Town in 2025.
Viruly's practice explores sites of fantasy, spectacle, and cultural myth-making in South Africa, examining how colonial aesthetics, consumer culture, and inherited symbols continue to shape contemporary ideas of desire, entertainment and affluence. Drawing on autoethnographic research, she creates hollow sculptural replicas of ornamental forms and serial objects using labour-intensive metalworking techniques of 'copying', questioning the authority of the original through processes of repetition, replication, and material transformation. Her work investigates the tension between belief and artifice, revealing spectacle as both a source of enchantment and a mechanism of cultural erosion.
