Lona Ndzimande's artistic practice deeply explores the multi-faceted realities of Black womanhood through the specific lens of her Zulu upbringing. Using a diverse array of mixed media—including acrylic, Zulu glass beads, rich fabric, pearls, papier-mâché, and paper collage—she creates deeply layered portraits that celebrate Blackness, femininity, and individual self-expression. Simultaneously, her work actively interrogates rigid societal expectations and the constraints of purity culture.
Ndzimande’s striking art beautifully balances intimacy, defiance, and joy. She incorporates rich textures, draped beads, and dimensional sculptural elements to highlight personal resilience, sensuality, and the true complexity of identity. Through this bold visual language, she builds vital archives of Black femininity that deeply honour historical tradition while critically engaging with contemporary life.
