Narique Sangster is a self-taught ceramic artist who works exclusively with
handbuilding techniques. Her intuitive, freestyle approach embraces imperfection
and spontaneity, allowing each form to unfold naturally – much like the rhythm
of a hip hop cipher. Exploring themes of freedom, honesty, and belonging,
Sangster reflects on her Cape Coloured identity and the complexities of cultural
inheritance. Influenced by hip hop’s “knowledge of self” and the boundless
worlds of Black sci-fi and fantasy, her ceramics become meditations on liberation
and self-discovery.
