Nelisiwe Nkosi
Nelisiwe Nkosi is a South African contemporary photographer and visual storyteller born in June 1999 in Soweto, Johannesburg. Her artistic practice explores personal experiences, childhood memories, trauma, identity, and healing through photography. She began her photography studies in 2017 at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg, completing the Foundation and Intermediate courses before progressing to the Advanced Programme in Photography in 2019.
Nkosi draws inspiration from her lived experiences, using photography as a means of expressing emotions and communicating stories that can be difficult to articulate through words. Her work often incorporates self-portraiture, symbolism, and representations of the body to explore vulnerability, resilience, and the process of reclaiming one's voice.
Her photographic series Breakeven reflects on the lasting effects of sexual violence and the journey from silence towards healing. Through this deeply personal body of work, Nkosi creates space for conversations about trauma, gender-based violence, and the experiences of survivors. Her images encourage viewers to confront difficult realities while recognising the importance of self-expression, understanding, and recovery.
