Nomvuyo Maseko

South Africa

Nomvuyo Maseko (b. 2001) is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Raised between Vryheid and Ulundi, her practice examines early adulthood through the psychological and social condition of early exceptionalism, with a particular interest in Black giftedness. Working primarily in oil paint and ceramics, she creates figurative works that consider what happens when identities formed around exceptional ability, potential, and expectation encounter the uncertainties of adulthood.

Her work explores the negotiation between who one was expected to become and who one is becoming, alongside the pressures, contradictions, and vulnerabilities that accompany exceptionalism. Light and the sun recur throughout her work as metaphors for giftedness, visibility, and the persistent demand to remain luminous, while also questioning what it means to exist beyond the conditions that made one exceptional.
