Sunday Ernest

Nigeria

Sunday Ernest (b. 1977, Nsukka, Nigeria) is a sculptor and sculpture technician in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His practice engages with the lingering effects of post colonial african challenges and consumerism while maintaining a firm footprint on environmental sustainability. Working extensively with discarded materials, particularly waste nylon wrappers, Ernest ties, binds, and reconfigures them into vibrant relief sculptural forms.
Through his transformation of everyday waste, Ernest reflects on the superficial solutions often applied to deep-rooted environmental and social problems while exploring the possibilities of discarded materials as objects of aesthetics.
Ernest was awarded the Best in Sculpture Prize at the Life in My City Art Festival (LIMCAF) in 2012. In 2019, he participated in the Flag Art Exhibition, which opened the Cheongju Craft Biennale in South Korea. His recent exhibitions include his debut solo exhibition, Folding and Tying Narrative, Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2024); +234 Art Fair, Lagos (2025, 2026); and Beautiful Game, Mitochondria Gallery, Houston, Texas (2026). He lives and works in Nsukka, Nigeria.
