Thebe Phetogo
Artwork
Thebe Phetogo (b. 1993, Botswana) is an artist whose work blends figurative and abstract landscapes painting to explore themes of race, Setswana geography, and indigenous knowledge. Drawing inspiration from sacred caves and African mythology, his art reflects on the concept of origins and personal identity, offering a unique perspective on how individual experiences shape our understanding of the world.
Through his work, Phetogo seeks to make visible the distinct world-version he carries. As the artist himself states, Each of us makes the world. In other words, it is our positionality that allows us to imagine each of our own immediate worlds. In my work, I endeavour to make visible the specific world-version I carry.
