Theresa-Anne Mackintosh (b. 1968) is a highly accomplished contemporary South African multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works in Pretoria. She obtained her BA in Fine Art in 1990 and her MA in Fine Art in 1995 from the University of Pretoria, majoring in painting. Shortly after completing her graduate studies, she joined a broadcast design and animation firm in Johannesburg, an experience that ignited a lifelong interest in digital narratives. This graphic sensibility has seamlessly expanded her traditional studio practice into a broad platform encompassing painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, animation, and experimental digital media.
Mackintosh's distinctive oeuvre sits at a compelling intersection of pop aesthetics, deliberate rule-breaking, and psychological depth. Her work focuses heavily on the human form, distilling figures down to an anthropomorphic, raw core to capture complex emotional, relational, and internal mental states. While playfully utilizing a clean, almost cartoon-like graphic hand and fresh, dreamlike palettes, her canvases and sculptures deliberately slide undercurrents of ennui, contradiction, and existential vulnerability beneath their polished surfaces.
A major turning point in her spatial practice occurred in 2008 when she was awarded a residency grant at the European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC) in the Netherlands, which deeply refined her handling of three-dimensional forms—including her iconic Tina fibreglass figure series. With over ten solo exhibitions to date, her decades-long legacy was recently celebrated with a comprehensive institutional survey exhibition titled NOW IS NOT FOREVER at the Wits Art Museum (WAM) in Johannesburg.
