Oh Weetie
Stellenbosch

Tamara Weetman is a South African illustrator, designer, and lecturer based in Stellenbosch, working under her studio Oh Weetie. Her practice revolves around narrative illustration drawn from everyday life, human truth and connection, music, and the small, often overlooked moments that shape how we experience the world.

I use drawing as a way of noticing. I am interested in the odd, ordinary, and quietly poetic details of daily life; the overheard conversations, half-remembered spaces, familiar objects, passing characters, and emotional traces that accumulate in places over time. These fragments become starting points for illustrated stories that sit somewhere between observation and interpretation, fact and feeling.

My work often leans into humour, nostalgia, and a kind of affectionate curiosity. I am interested in how illustration can hold contradiction: the intimate and the public, the personal and the shared, the sincere and the slightly absurd. Images become a space where these things can sit together without needing to resolve neatly.

Alongside my illustration practice, I am a design academic, lecturing and writing articles and attending conferences; where I think through design, illustration, and participatory making as ways of understanding people, place, and connection.

Across exhibitions, publishing, and illustration projects, my work explores how image-making can act as a form of social noticing, a way of paying attention to what is already there, just slightly out of focus.
