Shade
Johannesburg, South Africa

Shade is a non-profit that intersects waste, youth and the arts. Founded in 2019, as a waste materials library rooted in youth and the arts, Shade archives and reimagines urban waste while mapping and engaging communities through weekly youth arts programmes in Brixton and Hillbrow, artist residencies, exhibitions, and community-led parades like the Brixton Light Festival and Hey Hillbrow. Through initiatives like the travelling waste museum Phillipina and hands-on workshops, Shade fosters collective dreaming to prompt micro-solutions. At its core, Shade holds space for artists, crafters, waste reclaimers and academics to co-create with youth. Our pillar, Playce, emphasises play as a tool for agency and belonging. Children intuitively lead this work of worldbuilding, shaping an intergenerational mosaic - an ecosystem of imagination, resilience, and community care.
