Zara Julius (b. 1992) is a Johannesburg-based transdisciplinary artist whose practice spans sound, multimedia installation, performance, printmaking, and social practice. Working across research, archive, and performance, she explores Black cultural innovation, spirituality, memory, and collective forms of gathering, drawing on histories embedded in colonial archives, liberation movements, and personal memory. Her work investigates how embodied performance and sound can reshape understandings of time, affect, and historical memory.

Julius has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Javett Art Centre UP (Pretoria), Akademie der Kunste (Berlin), Kunstinstituut Melly (Rotterdam), Wereldmuseum (Amsterdam), Darat al Funun (Amman), and the Weltmuseum Vienna, where she presented her debut solo exhibition Whatever You Throw at the Sea... (2023-2024). She holds an MA in Fine Art by research and practice and has undertaken specialist training in documentary film and opera-making. Her work has been widely published, and her writing on "rapture" will appear in Thinking from Black: A Lexicon (Alchemy by Knopf Canada, 2026). She currently develops projects that bridge archival research, performance, and sonic experimentation.
