Drafts of the future.

28 October – 4 December 2026
Description

Drafts of the Future investigates a deceptively simple question: How does the future come into existence? The exhibition begins from the proposition that the future does not suddenly arrive. Before it manifests, it is continuously imagined, inherited, experienced and constructed through three interconnected states: memory, presence and speculation.

Memory is where we begin. It is the archive of what has already happened: the places we grew up in, the people who shaped us, the objects we remember, the spaces that hold emotional residue, and the histories we inherit before we have the language to name them. Memory is not simply a record of the past. It is an active force that continues to shape how we understand ourselves and the worlds we inhabit.

The second movement is presence, or being. This is the space of the now: what we experience, desire, negotiate and become in the present. The decisions we make today, the relationships we form, the identities we inhabit and the conditions in which we live are all contributing to the person and society we are becoming.

The final movement is speculation, or becoming. Here, the exhibition turns towards what has not yet arrived. We imagine, hope, question and project. We carry the lessons of our histories and the realities of our present into possible futures. In doing so, we do not simply wait for the future. We draft it.

The works in Drafts of the Future therefore operate as fragments of a larger temporal conversation. They move between domestic spaces, childhood, cultural memory, inherited knowledge, identity, womanhood, belonging, labour, grief, selfhood and transformation. Together, they ask what it means to inherit a past while actively participating in the creation of something that does not yet exist.

The exhibition proposes that the future is not a blank page. It is a document already be.
