Description

Bag Factory is pleased to present Dreamscapes In Transit, a solo exhibition by Leonardo Sitoe Curated by Muyon Mafulu This exhibition is a result of the Young/Unframed 2026 programme. Dreamscapes in Transit examines the relationship between dreams and the ways in which everyday life shapes and conditions them. Through painting, drawing, and sculpture, Leonardo Sitoe constructs an Afro-surreal world informed by intense and recurring dreams experienced during his daily commute across Johannesburg. Since beginning the routine of travelling between his studio and home, these dreams have become marked by a growing sense of paranoia and uncertainty, reflecting and absorbing the emotional realities of traversing the city’s spatial landscapes and confronting the enduring effects of the Group Areas Act. The exhibition emerges from Sitoe’s ongoing engagement with the changing nature of his dreams and their capacity to absorb, distort, and reconfigure everyday experience. By translating these dream encounters into material form, Dreamscapes in Transit investigates how dreams can function as a connective tissue between individual consciousness and collective memory, while offering alternative ways of understanding identity, place, and belonging within contemporary South Africa.
