Each year, ESSAY presents focused dialogues between South African artists across generations, exploring lineage, influence, memory, and material thinking. The programme brings practices into conversation that are not often seen together, offering new perspectives on both established and under-recognised figures. The 2026 edition centres on the work of Jan Neethling, presented in dialogue with a focused selection of works by his former teacher and lifelong friend, Robert Hodgins. Bringing their practices into close proximity, the exhibition considers how influence unfolds over time - shaped as much by friendship, critique, and exchange as by individual artistic trajectories. Neethling’s paintings are marked by restless figuration and shifting, unstable terrains, where portraiture, still-life, and landscape collapse into dense, psychologically charged compositions. Like Hodgins, he draws from observation of people, power, and the world as it presents itself, allowing images to emerge through process rather than prescription. On Friendship and Form foregrounds a relationship sustained over decades. In this space, painting becomes a site of exchange - where influence is not fixed, but continually negotiated, and where two distinct practices remain deeply, and productively, intertwined
