Enamel, oil, PVA, watercolour, charcoal, Scotch tape, masking tape, wax paper, newsprint, screws, nails and found material on plywood crate base. The gap, a place for things to fall into. The piece was originally part of our collaborative show, to, fail to (2026). It was a way to think through the present and presence. Things of the present falling into and finding their way here. Conjunction: a gap is also the space that facilitates an interaction, collapsing or conjoining the space between things. It developed over seven months of working and thinking together. First found as the base of some large crate, it’s taken many forms, been put together and taken apart many times. Elements entered and exited and we were figuring out how to hold and what to hold. It was a conversation between us, of the questions that occupy our minds and at the same time presenting the world with questions. Things entered out of laboursome necessity. Stripped screws, shoe prints, nails, staples or holes screwed into the wrong spot. Remnants – discarded objects, leftovers of labours, labours of love and signs of material memory. Here, material is evidence of a process and of something acted upon. It resembles some defunct and makeshift structure, a weathered wreck, a lived in wreck, a living wreck. Confusing, exposed. Confusing, irritating. This work was made in mutual engagement with both our practices, in process. It was an exploration, to test the limits of possibility for us, and to see how much more we were afforded to play with. It bears the marks of these experiments and conversations and these labours, as the product of a performative metonym for the ways in which structures come to hold a shape
