Inspired by the SeTswana proverb "Mmangwana keyootshwarang thipa kakwabogaleng" (The mother does not fear to seize the knife at its sharp point), The Ride Home is a powerful exploration of motherhood, womanhood, and unity. This body of work features intricate collages crafted from African archival imagery of black women, beautifully illustrating the strength, resilience, and interconnectedness of our shared experiences. Each collage is meticulously composed, blending historical and contemporary visuals to create a rich tapestry that honors the courage and nurturing spirit of black women. The process involves sourcing images from African archives, followed by a combination of traditional cut-and-paste techniques and digital collaging. Using archival paper, the collages are carefully assembled to ensure both the preservation of the images and the vibrancy of the stories they tell. Through these visual narratives, The Ride Home delves into the depths of maternal bravery and the profound bonds that unite women across generations and cultures.
