hidrângea I and hidrângea II, (2026) Oil paint on canvas (diptych) “Hidrângea” takes as its starting point a particular characteristic of the species that gives the work its name: the ability of its colour to change in response to soil conditions, particularly its pH. In this case, colour is not an entirely fixed characteristic of the plant, but a response to the conditions of the environment in which it grows. It is through this relationship between organism and territory that the work finds a way of considering human existence itself. In my research, humanity emerges as a species in a state of constant transformation. This change does not occur in isolation; we are shaped by the conditions that surround us, the relationships we establish, the territories we inhabit, and the cultural systems we produce. Just as the plant responds to the soil, we too develop ways of being through the environments that shape us. This perspective resonates with the philosophical, social, and political questions that run throughout my work. Life in society is likewise a continuous process of adaptation and reorganisation. As we come together in communities, we create codes, customs, values, and ways of interpreting the world around us. Culture, in this sense, both records reality and actively participates in constructing the truths through which we come to understand the world and ourselves. There is, therefore, an ambiguity inherent in the idea of adaptation. While it enables us to survive and create new possibilities, it can also lead us to internalise structures and values that appear natural precisely because they have been repeated and shared over time. What we believe to be true may also be the result of a historical process of acculturation, transmission, and transformation.
