A Carne Mais Barata do Mercado

A Carne Mais Barata do Mercado (2022) Acrylic, Charcoal and Pastel on Canvas A Carne Mais Barata do Mercado places the figure in relation to a fragmented landscape that emerges beneath her. Débora Sandjai brings landscape into the construction of the portrait itself. The fragments suggest the ways a person can be shaped by multiple places, images and cultural references. Her relationship to Angola provides an important point of departure for this exploration, particularly in considering how a sense of place can be carried, reconstructed and reimagined through the act of remembering. The work therefore brings the personal and geographical into the same frame, asking where a portrait ends and a landscape begins.
