/Xam Fortuin
Xam Sam Fortuin, is an interdisciplinary artist, healer and facilitator, based in South Africa.
He began to embrace his calling as a healer, which eventually led him to acknowledging his ancestral name, ‘/Xam’. Carrying the name of an indigenous Southern African tribe has enriched his connection to land, family and ancestry - who all impart invaluable stories that are channelled through his creative expressions.
In his masters thesis, Aba té Home, /Xam describes the framework for his interdisciplinary practice as ‘Ronde Taal’ - an indigenous slang that utilises its environment to communicate, survive and adapt to unfavourable circumstances. This framework accommodates /Xam’s utilisation of disciplines that would otherwise be seen as separate. Instead, he merges the disciplines of painting, sculpture, performance, video, installation, music and martial arts into one circular vocabulary that communicates stories rooted in respect for all of creation.
