Alice Mann (b. 1991) is a South African photographic artist whose work is defined by intimate, long-term portraiture essays. Central to her practice is the concept of picture-making as a collaborative act, where she aims to create nuanced and empowering representations of her subjects.
Mann's distinctive vision has earned her extensive international recognition. Her work has been showcased in numerous prestigious venues and events, including Red Hook Labs, Unseen Photo Fair, The National Portrait Gallery, Addis Foto Fest, and the International Centre of Photography. Her photographs are also a feature at major art fairs like 1:54 London and Paris Photo Fair. Both her personal projects and commissioned assignments have been featured in world-renowned publications such as The Guardian, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and National Geographic.
Her acclaimed series, ‘Drummies,’ which thoughtfully explores the world of all-female drum majorette teams in South Africa, has garnered multiple awards. These include the Lensculture Emerging Photographer Prize (2018), the PHMuseum Women’s ‘New Generation’ Prize (2018), and the Grand Prix at the 34th Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography (2019). In a remarkable achievement, four images from the series were awarded first place at the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize in 2018.
This celebrated body of work was the subject of her first solo exhibition at the Kunsthal Rotterdam in late 2021, which coincided with the release of her first monograph, ‘Drummies,’ published with GOST Books.
