Treasure Mlima
Treasure Mlima (b. 1999, Durban, South Africa) is a self-taught mixed media artist exploring themes of identity, space, and the African experience through his distinctive art. Raised between visual arts education in high school and self-driven learning via the internet, Mlima's journey of self-discovery is rooted in both trial and error and spiritual exploration. His ethereal work features untypical spaces against blank backgrounds, symbolizing a quest for answers and new identities.
Mlima's creative process includes the digital manipulation of found images, which he then carves into wood and paints with oil-based and acrylic inks. This technique results in 2D prints that deal with space and identity from an African perspective.
Mlima plans to work on a lifelong series titled "Honing," which will explore various mediums in a non-linear fashion. His art reflects his journey of rebellion against traditional art principles, using unorthodox techniques to capture the essence of his thoughts and emotions. Mlima considers himself a cultural practitioner with the duty to reveal hidden realities and suggest alternative ones using neutral symbolism.
His art is for anyone who sees value in it, and private collectors hold pieces of his work, continuing his legacy. Mlima's commitment to sharing a part of himself through his art ensures that his creations will make sense and be treasured long after he is gone
