Smiso Cele

Smiso Cele
Smiso Cele (b. 11/02/2002) in KwaZulu Natal, Port Shepstone. Cele is currently living in Johannesburg, practicing as an artist and completing his third year of his BA in Visual Arts at the University of Johannesburg. In his latest works he’s been exploring his interest in printmaking and drawing, trying to merge the two. As per Cele's prolonged desire to be an artist, he chose Visual Arts as a subject in high school (Olwandle High School). During his high school days, Cele attended numerous workshops (Woodblock workshop with Ben Ntsusha at Margate Art Museum, in 2020) and painted murals by means of elevating his artistic abilities in terms of mediums and skills. In exploring different mediums as per his interest to break through the conventions of drawing, Cele curated a show/drawing invention at Stokvel Gallery. The Exhibition functioned as a drawing in a sense that the gallery space worked as substrate to which he placed/made marks by placing selected artworks on the walls, feeding into his understanding of what drawing is. "Drawing is a continuous process of placing/making marks on a surface". He has participated in a few exhibitions, namely UJ's Best of the Best exhibition at Art and Collect Gallery in 2020, Margate Art Museum in 2022 and Best of the Best exhibition at Art and Collect Gallery in 2023. As he is in completion of his undergraduate degree, he's also been working as a studio assistant at Subotzky studio.
