Lesedi Ramushu
Lesedi Walter Ramushu (b. 1994) Lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ramushu is a printmaker, sculptor and charcoal artist whose work animates the traditions of storytelling embedded in South African culture. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lesedi uses a distinctive black-and-white monochrome style, influenced by colourblindness, to evoke childhood stories and life's lessons.
Lesedi’s visual storytelling is influenced by small-town life, manual labour and the history of African craftsmanship. Through handmade prints, the artist engages in the practice of carving linocut and editioning prints. The tactile nature of the process is what drew Lesedi to the medium. The elements of preparation, execution and waiting are essential in the creation process. Artworks by Lesedi are contemporary, and the memories of childhood are overlaid with the imagery of make-believe, collapsing memory, labour, and imagination into a single image.
