The Project Room Namibia | Heritage in Vibrant Dialogue: Maria Mbereshu and Lynette Musukubili
The Project Room proudly presents a captivating narrative of cultural convergence through the dynamic works of Maria Mbereshu and Lynette Musukubili. Embracing the ethos of inclusivity, our gallery invited these two emerging female artists to create new work for RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2024, a process which transformed our gallery space to their studio and opened up a dialog between the two.
Hailing from the northern reaches of Namibia, Maria Mbereshu’s work mirrors the bustling energy of her upbringing. Bold hues dance across her canvases, reminiscent of the vivid landscapes of her homeland. A kaleidoscope of colour, Maria's palette evokes a symphony of emotions, each brushstroke echoing her memories of familial bonds and communal living.
In contrast, Lynette Musukubili's artistic expression finds solace in the time-honored traditions passed down through generations of matriarchs in her village. Transforming humble plastic bags into intricate crocheted masterpieces, Lynette imbues her creations with a quiet resilience, a testament to the enduring strength of her cultural heritage and Namibian craftsmanship, each stitch weaving a narrative of resilience and renewal.
Collectively, the works of Maria Mbereshu and Lynette Musukubili serve as a poignant exploration of identity, tradition, and the intricate interplay between past and present. Drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage, these two young female artists offer a compelling synthesis of tradition and modernity, forging a path that transcends temporal and spatial boundaries. As they navigate the complexities of their dual identities, Maria and Lynette invite viewers to embark on a journey where the threads of tradition intertwine with the vibrant tapestry of contemporary African art.
This show runs from 22 - 26 May 2024.
