Tom Cullberg is a Swedish-born South African artist whose captivating paintings blend the familiar with the foreign, and the pensive with the playful. He delves into the space between tangible and intangible worlds, using collections of objects that appear like symbols from dreams. These elements float above abstract backgrounds, reminiscent of the ever-shifting nature of memory.
With a keen sense of humour and wit, Cullberg's work explores how we associate and recognize meaning in both personal and public stories. His unique style often challenges viewers to consider the fluidity of perception and narrative.
A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, Cullberg has established a significant international presence. He has presented sixteen solo exhibitions across four countries and his work has been featured in prestigious institutions and museums, including Kulturhuset, Stockholm; Goteborgs Konst Museum, Gothenburg; the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg and IZIKO South African National Gallery, Cape Town. His art is also held in notable collections such as the Swedish Parliament, SASOL, Spier and Hollard in South Africa and Nandos in the UK.
